Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue
Many people today find they are worn out and exhausted all the time in their busy lifestyles. Their body and mind is always in the 'fight or flight' mode. This means we are forever on the alert waiting for the next thing to happen. As a result, we find we cannot relax. If we cannot relax, we cannot sleep; either it is difficult to get to sleep or we wake during the night and stay awake for a few hours. Many people with Adrenal fatigue wake between 2 and 4am.
The result of this is that we get more and more tired and then we get more and more 'wired up', in a higher and higher state of alertness which causes even more tiredness. This can result in the adrenal glands being unable to produce enough cortisol to keep this state going.
As a result we start to become more and more tired. Some people are so tired and worn out that they can no longer work or do their normal day's activities. The worst of these are bed-bound.
Western doctors test the adrenals with a 24 hour urine test. The urine must be collected for the whole day, all put in together and then tested. This gives an overall result for 24 hours. Adrenal hormones change through the day. The highest secretion should be in the morning. This gives us the 'get up and go' feeling in the morning. People with Adrenal Fatigue often have low hormone secretion in the mornings and high levels in the evenings. This means that they cannot get going in the morning and are rearing and ready to go at night. This might suit shift workers, but not the rest of the population.
Naturopathic doctors tend to test the adrenals with a saliva test. The saliva is tested at different times of the day so that they can see what your adrenals are doing throughout the 24 hours. This gives a better picture.
Our adrenal glands sit on top of our kidneys and are connected to them. We have two kidneys and two adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are closely connected to the thyroid gland. So if you have a problem with your thyroid gland you may have a problem with your adrenal glands as well.
Norepinephrine is secreted by the adrenal glands and the brain in response to stress. Too much of this results in problems focusing, increased anxiety and an inability to tune out distractions. Other major hormones produces are cortisol, epinephrine and adrenalin. These all need to be in balance, along with the thyroid gland for a balanced life.

Adrenal Fatigue and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue can be a debilitating illness. The problem is the medical profession for years did not even believe it was an illness because they could not prove the patient had anything wrong with them from their tests. This put the onus back on the patient to find some relief for themselves. They turned to the Alternative health professionals who would at least listen to them. Read more...
Personally I am not in favor of being diagnosed by someone with the label of an illness.
In our society today, it has become the norm for people to be diagnosed or labelled with the name of an illness. I have found that with many people, this sits like a weight on their shoulders, weighing them down heavily. There are few people that, when diagnosed with a major illness, have the strength of mind, followed by body, to go search out a therapy that can ease their symptoms, sometimes even get rid of their illness altogether.
Many doctors, I could say most doctors, look at the statistics of illnesses and know the usual progression of the disease. This is then placed on the patient's shoulders and installed into their mind. They 'think' there is no solution.
Most doctors do not have the time to research new techniques that are found since their years of studying medicine. They rely majorly on what they learned in medical school and the seminars given by doctors, to update them with medical solutions.
Medical solutions towards disease lean strongly towards drug therapy or surgery.
It is quick and easy for the doctor to write a script and quick and easy for the patient to take the pill. Sometimes this can be a lifesaver for many people and can get them out of a dangerous health crisis. Unfortunately, many drugs have unpleasant side effects.
A Passion for Good Health
It also takes passion for a doctor or a patient to probe and learn to find other methods that can be a good and sometimes better, and have no side effects, than relying on the medicine chest.
A disease diagnosis is a name given to a list of symptoms. There is a list of symptoms for Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes and autism etc.
The symptoms of these diseases overlap. Many illnesses can have brain fog, anxiety, sore throat, palpitations, difficulty breathing. A label accumulates these symptoms. Once a label is applied to an illness, the person is sent to a doctor dealing in that group of symptoms. It takes a brave doctor to look for a solution outside what is being recommended by his colleagues.
Very, very slowly, people - the patients - are starting to look for other answers as they do not like the outcome that has been given to them eg 'you will not improve anymore' or the side effects of the drugs given to them.
One such modality that has now been recognized by The American Academy of Pediatrics is Neurofeedback. It is a form of brain training. Good results have been documented with ADD, ADHD, epilepsy, anxiety and traumatic brain injuries. They recognize it is as effective as medications for ADD/ADHD and rarely has adverse side effects.
Other modalities that treat many symptoms for varying diseases are
Light Therapy, Sound Therapy, Crystal Therapy, Homeopathy and Flower Essence Therapy.
If you look around you will find many people being treated with different modalities by mainstream doctors and by Complementary therapists. Don't be stuck with a label. Free yourself. Lift that weight by trying different therapies. Find the one that is right for you, one that eases your symptoms.
There is always an answer out there.
Go find it!
Anxiety is a problem for millions of people around the world, especially in Western society. Doctors only seem to have limited resources to deal with it. Their many choices are to right a script for Prozac like medications or sending you to a psychiatrist. This does nothing to get rid of the problem that was causing the anxiety. This problem is still there when you stop taking these drugs. The other problem is that it is difficult to come off these medications. You have to cut down VERY slowly under your doctors guidance.
A natural supplement, L-Theanine, also called Suntheanine, is a natural substance found in green tea. It shows great effects in calming anxiety. It can be used by adults and children with no adverse side effects. It can be used by people with problems in their brain including ADHD and ADD. It can help children settle and learn better.

What is heat therapy? Essentially, it is the practice of using heat for pain relief and to improve one’s health. The benefits of heat therapy for the human body are providing relief to those suffering from arthritis, lower back pain, headaches, for sore backs and for simple relaxation.
Compared to much more invasive types of treatment, heat therapy can be a very effective and worthwhile choice that is a lot easier than some of the other options.
Listed below are few types of heat therapy:
Saunas have been around for a very long time and are one of the primary ways to experience a heat session. Traditionally, saunas were heated by pouring water over hot stones, thus creating steam.
More recently, modern saunas use infrared technology. Infrared saunas emit Far Infrared light (FIR) which heats up the air around us and our bodies directly. FIR saunas have found their use in many fields such as detoxification, different cardiovascular benefits like heart health and increased blood circulation. Spending time in an infrared sauna has also shown to help with the immune system.
All this is making saunas a popular choice for athletes as well as anyone else that is dealing with sore and aching muscles.
On top of that, it’s incredibly relaxing and there are countless health benefits to reduce your stress levels. You can read more on this subject here.
Hot Stone Therapy
This is a type of massage that involves placing warm stones on the body. Sometimes, they’ll use the stones as an extension of their own reach, other times the massage therapist will simply place the stones on various points of the patient’s body.
This treatment is relaxing, and great for the muscles and blood flow. The stones are commonly made from marble or basalt. Typically, the hot stone therapist will use several different stones; their size depending on the muscle group. Here are some more examples of hot stone therapies and how the treatment is performed.
A hydrocollator is a device that you can use to warm up cloth heating pads to place on your body. There are heating pads filled with bentonite and they are submerged in warm water to heat up, then removed and place into slip covers.
You’ll often find hydrocollators in spas and physical therapy clinics; however some people opt to have them in their homes as well. This particular method to warm and soothe the muscles may be somewhat less effective for overweight patients, as suggested by research in a 2009 study.
Final Thoughts on Heat Therapy
Heat therapy is available in numerous forms, the simplest being taking a warm bath, but that doesn’t compare to the professional treatments out there. Our bodies react to heat more than you might think and every day researchers are proving that this way of healing is sometimes even more efficient than standard medicine. And after all, treat yourself to a nice day at the spa, you deserve it.

Stress Makes Illness Worse
It is being recognised by a slowly increasing number in the medical community that stress can make our health worse and even cause ill health. Some hospitals are setting up centres to study the relationship between stress and illness and to train people to relax.
Dr Benson, a cardiologist from Harvard University, studied the effects of meditation on the health of people for over 30 years. He went on to establish the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusett's General Hospital, USA. He has scientifically proven the benefits of meditation.
In industrialised countries we are continually on the move. There are always things to do, people to see and places to go. Everybody is so busy. We do not give our minds time out, time to just be and not worry about the next thing to do. We are trained today to have 2 or 3 things on the go at once.
Once upon a time there were mothers that stayed home to look after the children and the house. Today many mothers look after the children, the house and go out to work. How do they fit this in? Are they relaxed people? I'll let you answer that.
We need simple things to keep our minds on a more simple path. Here are a few suggestions.
10 Things to do to Relieve Stress in Our Lives
Laugh. When you laugh you are relaxed. Watch a funny movie, share some jokes, read some cartoons or a funny book.
Take a deep breath when you find yourself getting uptight.
Eat breakfast. This will give you energy for the day and boost your blood sugar levels. When these get low you become tired and cannot think clearly.
Go for a walk - 10 or 20 minutes is better than not walking. You may find that you can get this in by walking the stairs instead of taking the lift, parking your car further away from your destination or getting off a bus one stop earlier than your destination.
Take the children for a walk in the park.
The ultimate walk is to walk in the forest, woods along a country road or along the beach. This is away from all the hustle and bustle of life. Negative ions abound at the beach and amongst trees. Negative ions are calming.
Meditate for 20 minutes each day. Try to fit this is because it is really important. Try getting up 20 minutes earlier, do it in your lunch break or just before you go to bed at night. If you are saying right now that there is no way you will find the time, well you are just the person who needs to meditate. Just do it!
Put a stop to repetitive or worrying thoughts. Yes, you can do it. It is hard at first but slowly it will become easier. Just say 'No, I'm not going to think about that anymore'. Say it often enough and you will be able to train your mind to obey.
Start to pray. Perhaps you can pray for others, for example, people who are unhappy, people who have nowhere to live, people who have no food, people who are ill and people who are dying. Pray for your family that they will have a happy and healthy life. Pray that they will be fulfilled. There are always people who are far worse off than yourself to pray for. Pray to the deity you believe in. Repetitive pray also takes us outside of our thoughts. The Rosary is a good example here.
Take a holiday and take it before you become too stressed. If you are too stressed you will not be able to relax on your holiday.
Read to your children. Children love to be read a story even if they are quite capable of reading the same book themselves. There is something soothing about a voice droning on and on. Do you remember feeling dozy in class on a hot afternoon while the teacher talked? You have the added benefit of calming your children as well as yourself.
Do some gardening. This can be a great source of enjoyment for many. Plants have healing powers so the plants you choose for your garden will be just the ones you need. If you find yourself getting rid of some plant from the garden you probably don't need it's healing power any more or choose not to deal with the problem that plant can help you with.
What is your favourite stress relief?
Christmas can be a time of happiness or sadness
Christmas is a Special Time
Christmas time is a special time of the year. It is special for its religious meaning.
It is special because it comes at the end of the year. Everyone is tired and wants a rest.
It is special because children look forward to it so much. They long for Santa to come.
It is special because it is a time when family gathers together. Everyone makes a special effort to come together to celebrate.
Christmas Can Bring Difficulties
Christmas can also be a difficult time for some people. Leading up to Christmas can be hard. There is a lot of shopping to be done, decisions to be made about what to buy and for whom. There can be financial difficulties because we want to give more than we can afford.
All the big bills seem to come at the same time as Christmas making things even harder. There may be family difficulties. Perhaps everyone does not get on well together. It may be that someone wants to go home and can't for some reason. All these things can make us anxious.
For some, Christmas is a time of sadness because a loved one is no longer with us. This may be permanent or from a family breakup.
Homeopathy can Help
Now is the time to do what you can to make this Christmas an easier time for you. Homeopathic remedies can help ease anxiety and grief.
Arg nit is a wonderful remedy that can help ease anxiety about the future. It is also good to ease the craving for sweets. It may be a good time to visit your naturopath or homeopath to get ready for Christmas.

The regular practice of Qi Gong brings serenity and health
Qi Gong for Health
The benefits of Tai Chi are becoming known around the world. People are beginning to practice it more often in the western society. Millions of people in China have benefited from its health promoting exercise for centuries. It is common to see people gather together in China to do their regular exercise, especially early in the morning before their work day begins.
Qi gong and the Meridians
Qi Gong is a lesser known form of tai chi in the Western society. Some say Tai chi is a form of Qi Gong. Qi means energy or life force. I have talked about the energy flowing through the meridians in our body before. Meridians are invisible channels through which this energy travels. Qi is the name the Chinese give to describe this energy.
Qi travels around the whole body, not just a part of it. It affects the whole person. Therefore when some part of our body is blocked with emotions, the energy to this area is blocked and becomes stagnant. Think of the example when someone is blocked with grief and cannot express themselves - the throat is blocked and the words will not come out.
The practising of qi gong helps to unblock these areas, opening up the channels for the energy to flow again.
'The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions.' (See link below)
Qi Gong and the Emotions
Our emotions as well as our physical health and the state of our mind can all be influenced for the better by the regular practice of Tai chi or Qi Gong.
The Chinese medicine system treats the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual parts of our systen as a whole. Illness is a result of blockages of the energy or imbalances in the whole person.
Qi gong helps calm the mind. It is a set of simple, meditative exercises combined with the breath and a focus of intention. It helps us to keep healthy or become healthy. It helps reduce stress when practised regularly.
Qi gong and Tai chi are especially good for seniors. It improves the balance, strengthens the legs and the breathing. Regular practice has a benefit for the elderly helping to lessen the number of falls they have.
Tai Chi in China
We have been priviledged to spend a few hours watching the best people in Tai Chi in the world practising their routines. They practice 8 hous a day every day and are the fittest people and most energetic, all from tai chi.
I encourage you to seek out a class near you to get you started. Usually the people involved in Tai chi and Qi gong are lovely people.
Emotions can be positive or negative.
Homeopathy Helps Ease Negative Emotions
Homeopathy is a wonderful, natural medicine modality that can help ease our negative emotions. Negative emotions have been proven to be connected with inflammation in our body.
Time magazine placed inflammation on its front cover labelling it 'Inflammation: The Secret Killer' The article links chronic inflammation with heart attacks, cancer and Alzheimer's Disease.
Time to sit up and take notice of our negative emotions?
Negative emotions of the heart are anger, grief, sorrow, resentment, bitterness, self-centredness, hatred, envy and greed. These can turn into asthma, high blood pressure, migraines and shoulder and arm problems.
Positive emotions of the heart are love, gratitude, joy, forgiveness, hope, trust, integrity, dignity, tolerance, kindness and empathy.
Western Medicine or Natural Medicine
Everybody has a preference for the medicine they take. Some prefer western medicine. Some prefer natural medicines. People who take natural medicines tend to want to improve their health, not waiting for something to go very wrong before it is addressed. They tend to look more deeply at their emotions and are prepared to take care of their body to prevent serious disease.
People who prefer natural medicines like to be considered as a whole human being, not just a head to be treated or an organ to be specified. They realise that the whole body, mind and emotions work as one. They want something that will improve their overall body, not something that will mask the unpleasant symptoms theya are experiencing.
Homeopathy looks at the wholeness of a person. It treats the mind and emotions as well as the body. Homeopaths are trained to look at the emotions of the person as being the most important thing and the physical symptoms as secondary. Doesn't that tell you something? That the mind and body are connected.
Now some doctors of western medicine are beginning to see the connection between the emotions and inflammation. They have finally found a way to prove it. Onwards and upwards!
Homeopathic remedies, therefore, treat the emotions and the body at the same time. There are many different remedies in Homeopathy and your homeopath will go to great lengths to find the remedy that will suit you best.
Homeopathic Remedies for Negative Emotions
Here is a very shortened version of just a few remedies and what they can do for you.
Aurum This is GOLD. Who would not want to try the energy of gold? It is good for depression and suicidal thoughts. It also helps joint and muscle pain. It is also a remedy to look at if you are affected by SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder. If you have this you will be worse on grey, cold, cloudy days.
Ignatia Mental symptoms are turmoil after shock, grief, loss of love or disappointment, worry, anxiety and hysteria.
Lachesis These people feel hatred, bitterness, jealousy or envy. They do not want to mix with the worls.
Pulsatilla People benefiting by this remedy suffer from fear or anxiety about separation. It is also good for people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Sepia is great for women who feel sadness, tearfulness, irritability and suffer from restless sleep.
Nat mur is for suppressed emotions. This remedy is for people who suffer long term grief. They feel resentful and think too much about problems from the past.
The airways in the lungs close during an asthma attack
Warning: Always take your medication as prescribed by your medical practitioner.
What happens when you have an asthma attack
When you experience an asthma attack, the airways in your lungs contract, that is, get smaller and tighter. This makes it harder for the air to get in and out. The airways become inflamed and fill with mucous. This mucous blocks the airways even more.
Why do your airways contract?
Your airways are more likely to contract when you are anxious, have a viral infection or are exposed to allergens. Allergens are something that upsets your system. Your reaction to the allergens is a tightening of your airways.
There are many allergens that can affect people. They can be specific or varied. You may react only to one thing, or you may react to many different things. Everybody id different.
If your immune system is lowered you are more likely to react to more and more triggers.
Some common triggers are pollen, smoke, dust, chemicals, cold air, latex or aspirin. Find out your own triggers and avoid them if you can.
How to Boost your Health
By boosting your immune system and general overall health hopefully you will be able to say goodbye to asthma.
Take a Magnesium supplement. Magnesiun is known as 'the great relaxer'. It relaxes the muscles and vessels in your body. By having a plentiful supply of magnesium in your body, the muscles and airways are relaxed, not tight and ever on the alert for the nect thing that will come along to trigger a reaction. Very many people do not have enough magnesium in their body because our diet does not supply it any more.
It is generally recommended to take at least 400mg of magnesium daily. Take this in divided doses. One in the morning and one at night.
Vitamin C is another important natural remedy. It is an antioxidant. Our bodies do not make Vitamin C. Guinea pigs are also not able to make vitamin C and need a replacement. All other mammals can produce their own vitamin C. Who would have thought we had a similarity to a guinea pig?
Selenium is a mineral, a trace element and another important supplement. We need very little of trace elements in our body, but we still need them. Take up to 200mcg. Notice this is mcg which means micrograms. It is a much smaller quantity than milligrams. Check any other vitamin/mineral mix you may be taking as selenium is dangerous if you take too much. 200 mcg is enough. Selenium is also good for people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or ME or any other immune system illness.

Lavender smells beautiful and has healing powers
Lavender is a flower that many people think of when they think of the old days.
Long ago the washer women used to dry the ladies' washing by draping it over the lavender bushes. The clothing would be imbued with the scent of the lavender.
Lavender bags brought the scent into the linen closets. The heads of lavender were collected and put in a little bags then hidden between the sheets or underclothes in the cupboard. You may think of your grandmother when you think of lavender bags.
When the distillation process was established one of the favourite flowers to distill was lavender. People already liked it and had found uses for it.
Today lavender oil is one of the favourite essential or aromatherapy oils. People still like the perfume - or most do anyway.
The Benefits of Lavender Oil
Lavender aromatherapy oil can help ease headaches. Dab a little oil on your temples and massage it in. Take a rest while it works. You will find yourself calmer.
Lavender can help you drift off to sleep when you are restless at night. It soothes and calms. Put a few drops on your pillow when you get into bed.
Lavender can help relieve anxiety. Place a few drops on a tissue and keep it in your pocket throughout a stressful day at work, home or travelling.
Lavender can help relieve burns. The French scientist, when he was experimenting in the laboratory one day, burnt his hand then accidentally put it in a vat of lavender oil. To his amazement the burning and stinging eased quickly.
I always use lavender oil to kill off bacteria. Whenever I cut myself I always put a couple of drops of lavender oil directly onto the cut. It usually only needs to be done a couple of times for the cut to heal quickly. I find this useful whenever I have forgotten to wear my gloves in the garden. I always seem to get cuts and scratches easily and they usually get infected. However my beautiful lavender oil heals these for me quickly and pleasantly.
Lavender Hydrosol or Lavender Water
Lavender water was in use in the olden days as well as a perfume. Today, the water left over from the lavender distillation process is called a hydrosol. It can be ingested in small quantities for medicinal purposes but mostly it is used as a linen water or air spray. The linen water is sprayed onto the clothes before ironing, sprayed over the bed sheets to have them smelling pretty or sprayed around the room for a lovely fresh smell. This is much better than the chemical laden air fresheners bought in the supermarket.
It can also be used as a personal aura spray when we feel stressed. It is very calming.
The perfume from Aromatherapy oils and hydrosols does tend to evaporate. This is how you know that is the real thing. When the smell lasts for days and will not go away then you are much more likely to have a Fragrance oil. These fragrance oils are made from chemicals. I would not use these. They have no healing benefits.
Lavender oil is one of the safest aromatherapy oils and can be applied directly onto the skin. Do not use too much though. Always dilute it to use for a massage.
