Oranges contain salicylates
Asthma can be Life Threatening
It is often very difficult to pinpoint what triggers an asthma attack. Asthma can be lifethreatening. Three people among my relations have died from asthma so it is important to take it seriously. When I was growing up I often had asthma. When the asthma disappeared it was replaced with hayfever or eczema. These three reactions of the body are what we could term cousins in a family. They are all related. If you have one, you often have the others as well.
We were told by doctors that 'you don't die from asthma'. That was a long time ago and I certainly do not believe it. I did not really believe it then. After all if you cannot get your breath, you cannot breathe. So take asthma seriously.
Salicylates & Asthma
Today it is known that salicylates in our food can bring on asthma. I first found this out nearly 30 years ago. Every time I cleaned my teeth I got asthma. At the time I went to a doctor who knew a little about salicylates. He suggested that I look at the ingredients of my toothpaste. The toothpaste was the usual run of the mill toothpaste made by one of the giant companies that make these products. It was in every supermarket.
I noticed that there was peppermint in the toothpaste. Now I knew that if I went near a mint plant it took my breath away. So I searched out a toothpaste without perrpemint to see if I would be OK with that. Well, I never looked back. At the time I decided to stay right away from the mint family. I had also noticed that peppermint lollies gave me the same reaction, as did chewing gum with peppermint in it.
I was also told by the doctor that these salicylates were also in Aspirin, so I made sure not to take that.
Remember, there was no internet in those days. They were the times of passing on the word by mouth. If you happened to come across the people with the correct information that you needed you were in luck. But if you didn't find them, it was all about looking out for yourself.
I used to haunt the local library every week but again there was not much information published for lay people in those days. Today you can get on the internet and find helpful information in 5 minutes and there are also many books published on health that are available in the local libraries.
Food Containing High Amounts of Salicylates
Some common foods that contain salicylates in high quantities are lots of fruit including most apples, oranges, lemons, grapes, strawberries, pineapple, cherries and dried fruit including sultanas. Jam is included because it contains all the fruits. Other foods include tomato products (these are concentrated), peppermint, rosemary, nutmeg and cinnamon, vinegar and seasoned and processed meats.
There are many other foods, but I have just listed many of the common ones.
Common Foods Free of Salicylates
Common foods that are free of salicylates are beef, chicken and eggs, wheat, rye, oats, rice, sunflower oil, butter, cream, sugar, potato and cabbage. For a much more detailed list, click here.
Be your own detective and see if you can eliminate some foods and so ease your asthma. Good luck.
