People need an alternative to cow's milk for all different reasons. Here a few alternatives.
Some people are allergic to cow's milk. Goat's milk has similar properties to cow's milk and is the next most readily available animal milk in western society. Goat's milk has smaller fat globules than cow's milk and so is more easily digested. It has similar levels of calcium, vitamins and minerals to cow's milk. However it has higher levels of iron, zinc and selenium. Zinc and selenium are beneficial for the immune system, therefore goat's milk may be better for you if your immune system is compromised.
Vegans and some vegetarians may not wish to drink milk that has come from animals. These days there are alternative milks made from vegetable sources. They are not real milk but have been made into milk like substances so that they taste and can be used like milk.
People with a lactose intolerance cannot break down the lactose in milk. Goat's milk also has lactose. These people need an alternative plant source.
If you have Coeliac disease or are gluten intolerant do not use Oat milk as oats contain gluten, Rice milk should be safe for you as rice contains no gluten.
People with nut allergies should beware of almond milk as this is a nut from a tree.
Soy milk has become very popular. Many different companies make varieties of this. Soy is not a nut. It is a bean. Soy is a versatile bean that is also used to make tofu. Because tofu is used in Chinese food and the Chinese people did not drink or use cow's milk or their products (cheese, beef), I presumed that they would drink soy milk. However my Chinese friend tells me that in China they are recommended not to drink soy milk as it is not good to be consumed in that way. Do we have to rethink our use of it here in the West?
